Daphne Goodyear's Needlepoint Art is so unique!
I first learned of Daphne's art from my Florida stitching friends. I kept hearing the same phrase: "You must see Daphne's work!" A friend offered to drive and we went together after an ANG meeting in Sarasota. Daphne warmly invited us into her home. I stood in the foyer, mesmerized, not knowing where to look first!

Standing in the center of a Needlepoint Home Gallery which was filled with vibrant colour, I had to take several deep breaths to center myself! It seemed that my eyes were soaking in the exuberant use of stitches, soul-satisfying colour, exotic images. Daphne's style is vibrant, moving, exciting! In fact, words don't do it justice. I love the mix of silks, wool, beads, metallic's and more. Daphne uses thread the way an experienced artist uses paint: freely and from the heart.
Rosalyn

Daphne writes: "Over the years I have stitched hundreds of pieces of needlepoint including, chairs, pillows, wall hangings, blanket covers, benches, foot stools, Christmas ornaments, and the largest pieces, a five foot tall kimono, etc.

I am basically self-taught. For the first 30 years most projects were completed in tent stitch, or they would be Bargello designs. In the last 10 years, I began experimenting with all the new threads, beads and anything else I could get my hands on to enhance the design. And, fancy stitches and threads have not only enhanced my needlepoint no end, but I might add, have made my stitching much more creative and even more fun, if that is possible!"

Needlepoint Bench

See a detail of the bench

"This custom made bench was designed to sit under our Guardian Angel, one of our favorite pieces of art.  I picked up the colors in the angel when I designed the Bargello stitch on the top of the bench.  To further enhance the overall design, I used decorative fringe, cording and a silk satin striped fabric, which made this little bench a perfect little accent piece for our Angel.

My stitching began almost 40 years ago. My incentive to learn was simply because of a desire to decorate our house with handmade pillows and other objects that no one else would have. I struggled through my first needlepoint piece (a pillow), which I hated every stitch of the way! When the second canvas was purchased, I made a deal with my mother-in-law. She would do all of my backgrounds and I would stitch the picture part of her canvases. This arrangement lasted a year or so until finally, somewhere along the way, I learned to love completing each canvas myself."

Wild Women in History

See a detail of Mata Hari

"Every time I walk by this piece, I smile. What fun I had stitching all these wild women: Queen Liliuokalani, Scarlett O’Hara, Queen Elizabeth I, Marilyn Monroe, Madame Chaing Kai-Shek, Betsey Ross, Carmen Miranda, Evita and Mata Hari!  I used all kinds of fancy stitches and placed all the “ladies” in one frame. A close-up of Mata Hari is included to show how nicely her veil turned out!

I was travelling over 60,000 miles a year for my job.  I stitched on planes.  I stitched in between meetings. I stitched at night.  In every city, the local needlepoint store would be found.  Shopping in needlepoint stores nationwide was definitely a special treat, as each shop carried such different pieces. There was no internet in those days."

Santa Wizard - front and back

"This a stand-up Santa Wizard which turned out to be one of my favorite Christmas pieces.  I used many decorative stitches on his coat.  Plus I changed the original background color, which was blue, to this gorgeous deep purple.  At Christmas time we always look forward to having “Mr. Wizard” sit on our front hall table."

Needlepoint backed chair

"When my husband and I built our house in Sarasota, Florida, my goal was to incorporate my art needlework into the interior design.  In our living room are two periwinkle blue side chairs with Melissa Shirley designs inserted in the chair back and cross banded with a black and white silk satin material.  It always pleases me to hear the many compliments on these two chairs."

Bargello Patchwork Blanket Cover
and Tapestry Wall Hanging

"This is one way to get rid of all your stash!!! I started stitching squares in Bargello designs just for fun. I ended up with over 100. My favorites were used to make this blanket cover and wall hanging for our bedroom. The piece features lyrics about love for my husband, as well as sleeping. These tapestries exemplify my goal to incorporate needlepoint designs as focal points for the interior design of our house."

Zig Zag Footstool

"What is one to do with leftover threads? For my Zig Zag footstool, I started in one corner and ended up in the opposite corner. In between I made up various stitches and used different color combinations to make the stool look like a patchwork quilt! I loved the way it turned out. The finishing also enhanced my design.

I love needlepoint!  I feel so content when stitching.  It relaxes me and sets in motion my creative side!  I love my needlepoint friends, all of whom have contributed to my learning process, which thankfully never ends."

Commemorative Christmas Ornament

"For years I have been stitching Christmas ornaments that commemorate trips or special occasions or places we have lived. This one was done after returning from an African Safari in 2006 with my son. Other ornaments include one for our daughter when she became an All American Swimmer; another is the church in which Richard and I were married; another one is our house on Gibson Island, Maryland, etc. etc. Our Christmas tree has over 100 needlepoint ornaments. Each and every year the commemorative ornaments bring back special memories."

"I am so grateful to Rosalyn Cherry-Soleil for giving me an opportunity to show a few of my pieces on the Stitchamaze website. Needless to say, being part of her Gallery has put me in the company of awesome needlepoint stitchers! Thank you."
