It is always such a priviledge to be given a personal
glimpse into the life and work of an innovative and individualistic
needlepoint artist. I am so pleased to welcome Maryann
Monroe to this Gallery.
Maryann has been a needlepoint designer since 1985. She graduated
from the New York School of Interior Design and went on to the FIT
textile design program.
Starting her career with magazine work, Maryann's designs have been
published in such magazines as Needlepoint Plus and Crafters Today.
She has since been working "to the trade only" within the interior
design industry. Expanding her talents into a new direction, Maryann
is now offering her experience and unique designs for everyone to
own and enjoy.
This exhibition shows three of her exciting needlepoint 'Portraits'.
Maryann writes: "Andy Warhol" inspires my portraits.
I incorporate a lot of his design elements and technique into my
work. Zebra is one of my favorite paintings. The client gave me
complete control to create whatever I wanted. The floating quality
of my line drawing is, for me the best part!

Serious faces work best. This is a perfect
example. Children especially smile hard squishing up their face
and facial features. Although this girl is serious, the bright
cheerful flowers and colors lighten up the mood!
I am currently in the process of creating a hand painted canvas
line. My goal is to create a home collection line of designs,
which will coordinate. Although I love modern art, my line will
have everything from Egyptian to early 17th century and beyond.
I hope to present an eclectic mix of work done specifically to
accent any home.
Since I began designing, the largest
body of my work has been commissioned one of a kind pieces. Commissioned pieces are absolutely
the most gratifying for any artist. I enjoy commissioned work
the most when I’m given free reign to create the needlework any
way I like.
