My next Guest Artist is Sharon Boggon - whom
many of you probably know as sharon b, through her excellent stitch
index.
In her series "Samplers and Sampling" Sharon creates the most
wonderful illusions through her mastery of stitching and design - pieces
that inspire and ignite.
Sharon writes, "I am an artist who is interested in the connections
between textiles and digital technology. I am constantly aware that when
people encounter textiles they want to touch the work. In my textile work
through provoking the desire to connect physically with textiles I aim
to tap into a basic need to act in relationship to others. I use stitchery
to seduce, draw people into the work, and act as a metaphor for the urge
to connect with others in society. The desire to touch a textile, the
need to connect with the work in a physical sense is also a metaphor for
the internet and virtual communities."
Using her unusual combinations of technique and media, Sharon's work reminds
us that we don't need to feel or be confined or restrained by a specific
needlework tradition if we choose not to.
Sharon teaches at the Canberra School of Art which is part of the
Institute of Arts at the Australian National University, Canberra.
