"Heart of our Hearts"

Canvas Collage class with Sun Stitchers

[It all began in Winter - 2005. I'd been asked to teach a class for my Sun Stitchers's Guild, Sarasota, Florida. Karen Tranter and I had been writing back and forth, planning the workshop . . . see again the page from last year about Karen's heart canvas and my ideas of how I would approach embellishing it.]

2006 - Shirley Kerns, who was President of the Sun Stitchers Guild at the time of the "Heart of our Hearts" class, now tells you more about this Canvas Collage project:

Shirley writes:

"Helen Allen, Vice President Education, Sun Stitchers Chapter, American Needlepoint Guild, Sarasota, Florida, introduced the group to a great project that enabled the members to learn several new techniques.

The first part of the project involved learning from Helen how to do heat transfer our painted designs onto canvas using "Heat Set Ink" by Ranger. Their website is www.rangerink.com and the page about their specialty ink Heat Set is here:
http://www.rangerink.com/product_heatset.html

The second part of the project was taught by one of the members of the group, Rosalyn Cherry -Soleil.

This second phase of the "Heart of our Hearts" began with Rosalyn giving a presentation of her 'Canvas Collage'. She showed us her projects that were in various phases and explained how she got to each phase. Beginning with the blank canvas, planning the design areas, the application of fabrics and other types of embellishments (i.e. ribbon, yarn, beads, buttons, sparkling trim, etc.).

Later, Rosalyn taught us how to apply the embellishment items, including colorful patterned fabrics, to our heart canvas. She encouraged us to be creative and believe me some of us were very creative. I believe we used the "mind's eye" when embellishing our canvas. We first basted our fabric to the canvas. We then applied various types of embellishment. Some people built up the fabric with batting, giving parts of the heart a "3-D" effect.

All in all we had a great time letting our imagination just run wild. Rosalyn gave us suggestions on fabric piece choices, what to cut out, possible embellishment ideas, but still let us do our own "thing". What a great instructor, there when needed, but encouraging us be creative and innovative.

I thoroughly enjoyed the class. I learned a lot about embellishments and have already used some of Rosalyn's techniques in several projects I am presently working on. I would never have dared to use any kind of "sparkly" trim on a needlepoint project but now you can't stop my "daring".

On behalf of Sun Stitchers, Rosalyn, we cannot thank you enough for such a wonderful learning experience. We hope you will continue to enlighten us with your creative talents, and look forward to your return to Sarasota."

Many thanks to Shirley Kerns for these great photographs!

I was also SO happy to hear from Rita Wallace and Arlene Harris . . .

Rita, whose piece is shown here above, is Publicity Chair for the Sarasota Chapter, wrote:

"It was so exciting for me to learn how to paint my canvas and to learn how to embellish it. I had never done either of those techniques, and I am so grateful for the help you gave me.

I made a couple changes in arranging the fabric hearts. The stitched heart is embellished with a piece of lace from one of my mother's vanity scarves. I think it was old when I was a kid - the scarf was somewhat damaged, but I was able to cut out a rose and leaves. I bought a gold heart as another embellishment for one of the layered fabric hearts, and the third embellishment on the other fabric heart is a link I had removed from a bracelet which was too big for my arm. The stone is off-clear and reflects the colors of the fabric underneath.

It is framed on deep green suede, on which it floats; Linda at Creative Framing in Venice did a superb job.

Rosalyn, I do thank you from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful experience those classes were; my embroidery skills are much enhanced!

Rita Wallace"

Arlene Harris also wrote to me and here is some of what she said:

"I am a member of the Sun-Stitchers of Sarasota, Florida (ANG) and took the class you gave our chapter. We had been shown a heat transfer ink process that enabled us to tranfer a heart design to needlepoint canvas and then you taught us to applique and embellish the canvas. I learned so much from you that I was able to complete the piece on my own. I enjoyed the entire process, the learning, the executing and the completion of the piece.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful expericence.

Arlene Harris"
